Marissa Tiel currently resides in Toronto. She moved to the metropolitan city in the Fall of 2010 to study at Ryerson University, home to Canada’s most prestigious journalism program.In addition to a journalism degree, Tiel is also pursuing a minor in volunteer and non-profit organization management as well as a certificate in photography from the Chang School of Continuing Education.
While she lived in Calgary, Tiel attended the National Sport School for elite athletes in high school. She was a member of the junior national whitewater team for three years and reached a career high finish of 21 at the 2010 junior world games. Tiel is taking a break from the sport of whitewater kayaking while she attends school in Toronto. She is still involved in the kayaking community and has joined the local sprint club, Balmy Beach Canoe Club to continue training.
Tiel has been a healthy, vibrant, vegetarian for 7 years. She enjoys living life as green as possible. This eco-friendly lifestyle leaves her with abundant energy while being a student-athlete.
